Home of Navy’s N.C. bombing range manager searched
Jeff Hampton – (Virginian-Pilot) – MANNS HARBOR, N.C. – May 21, 2011 – A cadre of federal and state officers searched the waterfront home Friday of a Manns Harbor resident who has managed the Navy’s Dare County Bombing Range for more than 40 years.
Agents arrived at the upscale home of Harry Mann, 74, by noon and were still there as of 7:30 p.m. Officers and police dogs were milling in the fading daylight near the front porch under the shade of large trees. No family members were visible in front. At least six enforcement vehicles were parked in the spacious yard.
The Naval Criminal Investigative Service, the Defense Criminal Investigative Service, the Defense Logistics Agency – Office of Inspector General, the North Carolina Department of Transportation’s License and Theft Bureau and the Dare County Sheriff’s Office were there.
An officer said a search warrant had been filed with the U.S. District Court, Eastern District of North Carolina. None of the officers would give their names or comment on what they were searching for.
Mann has managed the bombing range in Dare County since it opened in 1968. It serves as a training range for Navy pilots who use it to practice bombing, with inert ordnance, and strafing.
