The camp itself was a former Republican Guard compound. TC has made all of the expansion and improvements using mostly local labor. The personnel perfroming most of the electrical repairs were local Iraqis and they often "jury rigged" stuff together to make it work. Just like everywhere else no ones wants to spend the money to do stuff the right way and even if they did they have no one at the camp that is qualified. The camp manager has no real experience in carpentry, electricty or plumbing but he is expected to make everything work. I worked at Camp Olympia for over 18 months. I will admit that some areas are worse than others and it really is what you make of it. At least here with KBR I live in hard quarters, I have a charter to Dubai for my travel on R&R and I am getting a good paycheck which is more than I can say for some other contracting companies out there. I would weigh the options before I would say that KBR is going downhill. Just for the record I don’t believe that KBR is as bad as some have portrayed them to be.
