Nope no Jeremy.

He said the incident you mention was years ago and was at McMurdo as well, they had no real laws then and the attacker as locked up until the first plane came in and took them both out but yes, he hit his supervisor with a hammer and near killed him, and walked free but the other one was in 2005 and the marshalls flew down and escorted the attacker to federal prison, just as they would have someone here escort someone.

Laws are as enforeable here as in any US state, especially violent ones.

Did they claim insanity or something? Depression due to the isolation and darkness? I can’t remember. That’s great that the Federal Marshall’s are enforcing the laws. It was the wild wild west down there for quite a while. There was quite a bit of depression at our base as well. That was my first out of country job and I didn’t know quite how to handle the isolation. If I were to go back I would do things a little differently. I would probably start drinking a whole hell of a lot sooner!!!

Fortunately, Iraq is a bit different.

Anyway, if you absolutely had to have your way…wait until dark to make your move.

Violence on a military or Government base is subject to Federal law and punishment, the guy who was arrested got a few years big jail time so beware of your anger and the costs to you IF the military decide to push for punishment.

I may have been in Antarctica when that happened. I was at another station. If I remember right this happened at South Pole Station and the chef/cook hit someone over the head with a hammer. Of course…that might be just another incident. But, the US maintains that these Stations are US soil even though no one owns Antarctica. They want to keep a foot in the door in the event it opens up so that Antarctica can be exploited and totally destroyed for it’s resources.

There were several countries who claimed the Island that I was on. We would fly the US flag. But when a ship from the Argentine Navy showed up we took down our flag and put up the Argentine flag. Chile also claimed this island. So enforcement of laws down there is subjective. I also remember we had to pay federal income tax because, there are no countries down there so you are not really an expat. It is kind of a weird situation.

Just an FYI, that statement is incorrect as I see it.

After the Security Agreement (SA) was signed we had to go to a long briefing by the base JAG to find out what was changing. Most of the changes were for the military on their SOP, but for all personnel across theater the MAIN thing was that if you commit an act of pre-meditated rape or murder, you are on the Iraqi’s turf and the US had to hand you over to the Iraqi’s if they come asking. The military had also received explicit orders on *most* camps that Americans were not to be turned over to the Iraqis under any circumstance.

I can understand why the Iraqis took those guys from USMI-C…by the time the Americans found out, it was probably too late to get them off the camp, plus, if someone really did commit premeditated murder or rape in Iraq, it’s completely fair to turn them over to the Iraqis .

Simple assault & battery or aggravated assault will not get you turned over to the Iraqis, but it will earn you a ticket home and you will be ineligible for rehire, not to mention opening yourself up to a civil suit by the victim (though I’m sure in a lot of cases they deserve it). CID may also step in, but with KBR it’s very rare, though it depends on the severity and nature of the attack.

I’m sure there are other legal implications, but as far as the US Army or DoD is concerned, what I have posted is all that I am aware of.

I really hope you’re right. You can’t keep kicking a dog and expect it to never bite you. Although I don’t condone violence, no one wanted to sell my general foreman to the insurgents more than I did. Damn there was a point where I would have paid them to take him!! That is no joke, I am dead serious. But….I refrained.

A PST file is where your mail is stored if you are issued a laptop/desktop and are set u p properly on it. In outlook, on the left, if you see a “Mailbox – Name GoesHere” then that’s on the server, if you see anything else, and your mail is being diverted there, that’s a PST.

To find your PST, go to:

1. Go to Start
2. Search
3. All Files And Folders
4. Type in “.PST” (without the “) in the 1st box (All or part of the file name)
5. Click on the down arrow next to “More Advanced Options”
6. Check the first 3 boxes (System Folders, Hidden Files, and Subfolders)
7. Click Search
8. Change view to “Details” view
9. Find the ones under your USER ID (Will look something like this: C:\Documents & Settings\YourUID\blah blah blah\filename.pst)
10. The ones with the larger file size are the ones you want that are in YOUR user id’s folder
11. Shut down outlook completely, wait a minute or so…
12. Copy the PST to an external hard drive or thumb drive, send a copy to the states along with some other random personal stuff.
