KBR’s Reduction In Force (RIF)

FacebookStumbleUponRedditDiggLinkedInShare

People have been asking me for a month if I had any hard facts about KBR’s RIF. It all been rumor until today. KBR is required by the DoD to reduce their numbers by 5% each quarter BUT with the locations that KBR has lost the RIF could be 30-60% for American Expats and I am told 5% for subcontract workers (SCW/TCN). Does that sound like KBR is replacing expats with SCN/TCN’s? That’s what is sounds like to me.

There is no way that KBR can DMOB that many people at one time although they might try.

I want to be clear about this. I am not TELLING you to do anything, but if YOU had already been planning to bring home KBR emails (PST file) and/or documents to forward to the CID, the DCMA, the DCAA, an attorney, the Senate, the House by saving them to a CD/DVD/flash drive/printing and mailing or forwarding, you might want to get on that. See comments for instructions on how to download your PST file. I’m certain they will tell you that you can’t do that and will threaten you with all kinds of things because….that’s what KBR does. THREATEN!

Also, you know things are going to be all FUBAR’d at Camp Victory and BTC. You could be there for days. Don’t go to BTC without cash, toiletries, and a few changes of clothes. And don’t be stupid by trying to smuggle something illegal, like a hand grenade or something, out of country.

Also, I would love to know which camps KBR has lost. It’s going to be up to you to tell me what you’re being told and what’s going on. So I can tell the others.

I am copying this comment from another post on how to download your PST file. Thanks Guru!!!

A PST file is where your mail is stored if you are issued a laptop/desktop and are set u p properly on it. In outlook, on the left, if you see a “Mailbox – Name GoesHere” then that’s on the server, if you see anything else, and your mail is being diverted there, that’s a PST.

To find your PST, go to:

    1. Go to Start
    2. Search
    3. All Files And Folders
    4. Type in “.PST” (without the “) in the 1st box (All or part of the file name)
    5. Click on the down arrow next to “More Advanced Options”
    6. Check the first 3 boxes (System Folders, Hidden Files, and Subfolders)
    7. Click Search
    8. Change view to “Details” view
    9. Find the ones under your USER ID (Will look something like this: C:\Documents & Settings\YourUID\blah blah blah\filename.pst)
    10. The ones with the larger file size are the ones you want that are in YOUR user id’s folder
    11. Shut down outlook completely, wait a minute or so…
    12. Copy the PST to an external hard drive or thumb drive, send a copy to the states along with some other random personal stuff.

KBR hasn’t lost any camps yet as LogCap IV has not been announced. The small camps are closing, but KBR is not at most of those. We were also told we won’t even see the BTC, they are going to send us straight to BIAP and then Kuwait or Dubai. I think they are spacing it out a few days. Plus they sent out a Blue Border today on the reduction and it starts on June 3.

    Ms Sparky’s Response:
Thanks for that info. Too bad Victor Bout (google him) has been arrested in Bangkok. I’m sure he would be more than willing to contract charters with KBR….AGAIN!!

Well at TQ we lost welder, plumber and property supervisors in 1 day. All supervisors were called into the offices and told to take a pay cut or a ticket home, some were not offered the pay cut though. We are waiting to see who goes next though and there are no more footlockers left due to everyone getting packed and ready, just in case.

I already have all my damning evidence, have it uploaded to an online storage site also, just in case something happens to what I carry with me through BIAP.

Everyone needs to remember a few things about KBR, security have no enforcement abilities, they are basically Wackenhut watchers who can observe and report, if they tell you they have the right to inspect your equipment or hold it until they have look at the files, remind them that only an MP has that right and you would be more than happy to talk with the MPs about what KBR are saying they can do.

Can you imagine the amount of people walking around without KBR hats and lanyards as they walk away for the last time? Will be funny when KBR can no longer threaten you for not wearing such any more.

    Ms Sparky’s Response:
Well done!! It’s a wonder you guys are not having a big “burn the hats and lanyards” party!

And…what’s with “take a pay cut or you are out of here”? That sounds like….threats and coercion. I think that’s illegal!

HELLO DOD ARE YOU PAYING ATTENTION TO THIS?? Do we need to call the United Nations to get protection for Americans working at DoD facilities abroad?

  7. 7
    Curious says:

The funny part of the hats and lanyard mandate is the fact that originally the military banned personnel from wearing anything identifying the company you worked for because it put personnel at risk for abductions. I would say that they will regret their actions if something happens to an employee but we know that won’t happen.

I do have to wonder who’s Kinfolk, Brother or other Relative owns a shop that designs baseball caps and promotional merchandise? Wonder if the taxpayer is footing the bill for this stuff. If so, it is creative — use your employees as billboards and charge the taxpayer for the billboards and make a profit while doing it.

    Ms Sparky’s Response:
    Good point!!

    ??'s for Jims thoughts says:

Had heard that the B Sites were reducing camps and that KBR wasn’t at TQ anymore, which caused the tent cities at BIAP. Resulting in personnel not in the BOE being kept on the payroll at taxpayer expense, of course. Also heard the ACO at BIAP was a little miffed about that.

What happens to employees that take the paycut, if they change their mind?

Are they signing new contracts or just addendums?

    Ms Sparky’s Response:
Yes….please let us know about that.

Keep your hats and lanyards, when you go back with another contractor, sport them now and then….

I’d love to be working for another contractor, and some dumb shit KBR PM come up to me because I have on a KBR hat or lanyard w/ shorts, and being grilled about KBR policy…. Then telling him to go shit in his hat and watch him get all puffy and high and mighty, then walk away knowing full well he can’t touch you.

??’s for Jim…. as far as I know, TQ is still up and running. I know they are closing B-3 (Formerly Fallujah, but now called Baharia… an expensive story, email me if you want info)… but, from what I understand, TQ is slated to be closed next, then Ramadi. I could be wrong, but when I was still at B-3 that is the story I got from some “important” military people…

    Ms Sparky’s Response:
Of course I want more info on that. ;) Send it PLEASE!!

    Jims thoughts says:

Jim, we are still here at TQ but WAY over BOE in a number of areas and they took a lot of people from other camps that were closing even when the dept’s were overstaffed already. Looks like this will be about the last camp in the area to closed but the Sept deadline is coming soon even for here.

Baharia, know many there and hearing more stuff about that each week about how messed up it is and they are fighting to get things right just in time to close them down, sounds like the waste water pit over at fallujah which they completed a few months before shutting the camp down and handing it over, about a year after the pit was supposed to have been done already. They had every heavy operator out on that job for weeks even though they knew the camp was closing, guess they had already billed and paid the money so they were gettng it done before having to answer too many questions, why did the Military not check the completion dates?

It is better for them to spend more time and money to get something done late than to admit billing without doing, if contracts and actual dates are looked into though I am sure there would be more cases brought for wastage and improper billing.

Sparky, word is that the ones who were given the choice were told the BOE does not require them to be there, take a pay cut and reduction in status to foreman instead of general foreman and keep the job, say no and the people in that job will stay there instead and just do the job that is above their pay grade.

The value of a person is in how fast they join a Buddy System, the value of a Buddy System is in how fast those in it turn on each other when the first crack appears and the cracks have appeared here indeed.

    PPI Sux says:

I heard that PPI employees that are returning from R&R are now being required to take a skills test in Dubai before KBR will let them return to their job. If KBR decides they do not require the person they send them back to their home country. This is after the personnel have used personal funds to pay for airfare etc. to travel home and then return to Dubai for R&R.

Apparently PPI employees in Iraq are upset enough that several of them have gone to the Mayor’s Cell and the Military is going to have a meeting with PPI.

The Military is just as guilty as KBR and PPI. They are the ones who let this happen. US Military endorsed slavery.

    Ms Sparky’s Response:
I just am not understanding how the DoD is allowing this slavery to continue. Now I have to ask how many of these SCW/TCN’s are going to be left stranded in Iraq?

    Whoisit? says:

Yesterday at Balad the plumber, laborer, and carpenter foremen were asked by the PM they had three choices: 1. Take a pay cut and still do your job. 2. Voluntary Demob. 3. Transfer to another base.

They haven’t talked with the electricians yet…
I imagine they’re afraid of a massive walk out. I figure at least 50% are so fed up with mgmt and their BS that they would happily take chicken or pasta!
It’s been so bad that people have been contemplating doing something stupid just to get time off (w/o pay of course).

Another subject that I should have mentioned long ago is that the flash team has a HVAC foreman on it doing electrical work. If I remember correctly he was HVAC 17 and is now Electric 7. I do remember him working the flashes and supervising SCW’s on how to ground and bond among other electrical things.

Just another KBR BS. His call sign was changed because the military didn’t like him be called to the job as an HVAC when they were wanting an electrician.

Heard tonight that 600 people were leaving from JBB, but that is rumor…

    Ms Sparky’s Response:
    I’d have to say “pasta-aisle”

It is very likely that he might have a journeyman electrical specialty license just for HVAC. Both Washington and Oregon have many journeyman “specialty” electrical licenses like HVAC. That does not license you to install anything not associated with HVAC. So he is not licensed to install a grounding and bonding systems. I have tried to explain these specialty licenses to several people lately. They had no idea that all journeyman electricians were not the same. Send me a name and a state and I can look it up on-line or….you can too.

  14. 14
    SEII Employee says:

Again Sparky, a lot of rumors but not much truth from the masses. They sent out an e-mail today from headquarters that said they were evaluating the last two days, and the cuts would be made on June 6 based on who was demoted and who quit. They also said it will be around 1,000 cut across Iraq (which is 4-5%). And I would bet money that HVAC 17 has his electrical license (or at least a decent forgery) because that is one thing KBR is doing right now. It is crazy around here and very sad as we hear some of our workers being demoted or deciding to not take the demotion and go home.

    Ms Sparky’s Response:
Again….I will bet HVAC 17 has a specialty license. If someone can give me a name and a state I can look it up.

  15. 15
    Ken@Home says:

HVAC techs can get electrical licenses. They’re Journeyman Limited licenses.

    Ms Sparky’s Response:
This true, but it doesn’t license them to install bonding and grounding systems. It is a specialty or limited license depending on the State. It’s for HVAC work only.

As of today the rumor is that the RIF has been delayed, ONCE AGAIN, due to some legal bullshit that KBR apparently “forgot” to look into. I can only imagine, maybe the guy at JBB who got his head busted open or maybe the fact that KBR didn’t plan on people demobing after being threaten with the RIF for 2 months now and leaving sites mission critical. I think a mass exodus would be perfect!!! All expats should leave and let KBR preach quality then!!!

Good to know thanks. I would like to know more about the guy at JBB.

Hi, I am from Bosnia, I worked for KBR for 12 years, ten years in Bosnia by military bases, and two years in Iraq log cap 3. KBR is a good company, who has many unskilled people for jobs, but especially a man makes a nervous. What is lazy people who will not work if this is perhaps the American or FN is not important to people not to work. Just sit and waited to past day and then enrolling those 12 hours. many employees are not thinking and not the person that keeps reigned as tools, vehicles, and the partial exception of several, and only when you go where the trash, you will a lot of new things. So some times I thinking even I am is FN to someone all paid, and the food what to eat and it’s all paid for some, sadly that many people lose a job working but ,it is important that we have a lot of administration that does not work for nothing and lot of supervisors to no doing nothing . What I would like to say when we have good salary to the salary you need to earn, especially if it is to let the other side of the company in this case KBR have to fight to prove self and to keep to things same like
as it is yours, so thank the US-led company KBR I gave the job, and I believe that in Huston know how to work some managers and supervisor they unproductive that people is probably lose job, and what nice amazed me, working with the Americans 12 years, you have great people and help for everyone, thanks a lot, and as I said has a sadly that normal workers lose jobs. I hope that will be able to read because my written English is not good side

    Jims thoughts says:

Sorry, no ACL on that waste water in Fallujah, was too long ago to recall and have no contact details from anyone there, wonder if we can get them on Freedom Of Information Act rgulations? FOIA allows us a lot of things but I will have to look into whether we can get the ACL list and then look up projects on it and that is only good IF they charged the equipment and man hours to the work that ws being done and not charging it to regular junk hours.

PPI, our guys were called in and they were no asked much but, what they were asked was mostly to do with how well they spoke, read and wrote English. It appears they are going to be taking over even more work here soon and they want to know that the ones they keep are able to understand what they are being told to do and hopefully not understand if it is legal or not. We already have a few in the warehouse doing the computer work and some others taking care of other paperwork that was the job of an Ex-Pat until recently, had one PPI man last year who has his own truck and crew doing electrical work and to be honest, I felt better with the work he did than the work of most of the rest of the electrical shop. KBR were abusing the guys ability and knowledge and not paying him anything more than he was getting as a laborer even though he as doing more and better work than many of the Ex-Pats and because he does not write very well, he may be one of those sent home.

Admir you are so right. I shouldn’t have addressed just the expats. Let me put this a different way. If all the lazy and incompitent personnel would leave this project it would certainly show just how well the jobs are getting done and then KBR would have no reason to preach quality. I have seen many good employees doing a great job only to be brought down by the rif-raf that continues to be employeed here. I am too thankful for the job that I have and that I am making a difference for our soilders. And thank you for your dedication too.

BUCCA has been plagued by problems from the beginning. There were stories about that site and management incompetence that spread like wildfire. The camp manager and one of his crony’s caused a bunch of stuff in the 2006-2007 era. The crony supposedly had an electrical background but did something to cause problems that got the military’s attention.

    Ms Sparky’s Response:
I have heard that. But I promised there is at least one “dick head” KBR manager at EVERY camp that has taken pleasure in provoking people and jacking with them. We’ve all fantasized about throwing the Top-10 over the T-wall into the red zone at one time or another. But we don’t!! Well I didn’t!! I just can’t condone retaliatory violence.

My EOC is up in September but I don’t think I’m going to go. I rather collect some loot before they “release” me.

The RIF shouldn’t have been a surprise. I’ve been on project since 2004 with KBR mainly in C sites and H sites. If you’ve been on the project since 2003/2004 you could see the writing on the wall months and months ago.

We were kicked out of Eaglia yesterday and moved to new blue complex, all offices are in the blue complex now, except for KTC which will be here tomorrow. Now KBR is scambling to get us out of country to BTC since our CAC cards expire on June 12th and our visa 18′s were cancelled. They r clueless to what is going on. I am just amazed at the upper mngmnt here, and how all this is being ran, well on 2nd thought i should not be. KBR Wife says:

Ms. Sparky, my husband and I love your site. Thank you and your contributors for the updated information.

My husband is a current employee and I a former. He’s returning to Iraq from EOC as this is typed and is a 4 year employee of the XX Sites. Like many others have stated, no current news of RIF has been forthcoming from his management. Upon returning to Dubai after his last R&R, many employees where given the choice to go to Afghanistan or de-mob and when he finally arrived at BTC, it was a cluster*** of the highest grade. He’s long been aware that the only guarantee from KBR/SEII is WHEN you’ll get screwed, not IF. He called me from London this morning and I read to him the latest on RIF, so he is prepared for whatever happens in Dubai.

I was with KBR for almost 14 months in the property office and fired last year after a medical leave request was denied by theatre HSE. I broke a tooth off during EOC (requiring a crown) the day before I was scheduled to return to theatre. Like others, I followed their rules and guidelines listed on the clearing/sign-out sheet, and in constant touch with my supervisor as well as Dispute Resolution (nice ladies, but totally worthless with regard to anything in theatre). All for naught…

KBR has contacted me twice via email in the last two months regarding my CAC, which will remain in my possession after reading the posts here. I don’t know what to do with it, but KBR isn’t getting it back.

Does anyone know the status of the overtime lawsuit(s)?

    Thanks again,

    KBR Wife

    Ms Sparky’s Response:
First, I took out your husbands work location…just to try to protect him from KBR.

As for the CAC. If you do give it back, make them sign a receipt for it. You can type one up yourself and fill in the name and SAP# of the person receiving it. If you can, scan a copy of the CAC card right into the receipt. And be sure to keep this receipt indefinitely or until you are issued a new CAC card.

Maybe I should make up a receipt in MS Word and put it on the site.

Yes….what is going on with the overtime suit!!

  26. 26
    stew says:

“Chicken or pasta?”??!!! You all give KBR too much credit! It’s “aisle or window? your cheese sandwhich will be along shortly” … at best.

Well, I just got the ax about 10 days ago. A victim of the RIF. I know a ton of people that were demoted and quite a few others offered only a ticket home. We’ve got one day to pack and ship our belongings home, skipping the BTC and given cheap, multi-multi stop flight tickets.

The firing seems to be mostly indiscriminate – as I have no doubt whatsoever I would still be employed if my manager (he happens to be a FAM (functional area manager)) had any say-so. At least that’s what I tell myself. The unfortunate part to that is they are just squeezing the trigger into a crowd type firing and its really crippling the departments. I think future talks of “Quality” will only draw laughs from my remaining former colleagues.

Anyway, given the fact that folks HAVE BEEN paying taxes now – does this RIF entitle anyone to unemployment? Or still “no” because of that scandalous, greedy, SEII scam.

    Ms Sparky’s Response:
That is a good question about the unemployment. I would suspect no, because unemployment is a State program and the tax legislation only dealt with Federal taxes. I would file and see what they say and then let us know.

  27. 27
    Jims thoughts says:

KBR Wife, I would suggest finding the nearest military base and calling them to ask if they have a badging office that you can drop the CAC into, they will at least be certain to mark it down as safe and clear you of ownership.

    Ms Sparky’s Response:
That is a great idea!! Get a receipt!

    Baboo Remembers says:

You have a bunch of “stereotypical uneducated southerners and hillbillies,” of both races running the show with limited experience. This is not a true reflection of southern culture by any standard and does not represent the best of its culture. It also does not reflect the many excellent educational institutions of higher learning in the region. It does however; highlight KBR’s long-standing preference to hire these types due geographic location who think they’re entitled to something.

Hiring former military makes sense on the surface but even those types are not always the best suited for the job. These types of people mentioned above usually can’t think outside the box and don’t have problem solving skills because they haven’t been trained to do so. Remember anyone can forge a resume and talk a line of crap. I have talked my share of trash from time to time but it was always based upon fact and personnel experience within their organization and never took the first swing during my employment with KBR.

I was responsible for having two engineers removed. One slept in a tent during work hours. His resume claimed he had performed great works of engineering during his brief tenure. In fact the military had already performed these feats before he ever arrived on site. The other took credit for work performed by the military as well and played the race card when questioned about sleeping with military females and lack of job performance.

I will never apologize for these comments because it is the truth. My story is not unique and does not reflect the opinion of Ms Sparky.

I heard from my husband about his first full day back on base. Here is (some of) the scoop:
1)All supervisors were knocked down to foremen w/foreman pay.
2)Logistic managers knocked down two levels w/pay to match (am not sure what position this is..log coordinator?).
3)FAM’s were knocked down several levels with pay to match.
4)Heavy de-mobs with the population in living quarters thinned considerably.

Everyone knocked down still bears the responsibilities of their previous job title. Interesting to note, there were many new hires in orientation yesterday. He isn’t sure if they were ex-pats for FN’s. Camp management and QA are constantly checking and auditing every department for functionality versus staff. For the remaining employees, hang on…it’s guaranteed to be very bumpy ride.

P.S. I hope you have your own KY…and don’t count on a kiss, either.

TQ just finished its first stage of the RIF and we are getting new employees in from other camps that are closing down, how can they justify taking on more when we just got rid of some to get down to BOE levels?

Everyone is just waiting now to jump ship and wave farewell but it seems as if we are getting from one bad company to another if the others are hiring the ones KBR have already fired.

    Ms Sparky’s Response:
Many of the ones KBR has fired have been good people with bad management. The ones who were trying to do the right things and were then fired for not wearing the KBR hat or something equally stupid.

Not much more to add to this post, one thing I would say is that I wish I was aware of the CAC card controversy when I was ask to leave, unfortuntley I did not find out about it until it was too late. Ok I was fired where I made my mistake was that I told the truth about an incident that happened while taking a truck over to maint I did not double check the connection between the trailer and tractor and the trailer came off and hit the ground, no damage. It’s a long strange story but anybody that ever worked for TTM know’s what I’m saying. They worked me like a convict for 4 or 5 week’s since I was unable to drive during the “investigation” If you can call it that. Then 1 week after comming back from R&R I was given the happy new’s. The main thing that pissed me off was the fact that my supervisor and foreman both lied to me about what was going on. When I went thru safety to turn in my driver’s license which of course I did not have, to get signed off they told me that according to there computer it showed that I was supposed to have gone thru the driving course (saftey training) and recieved my license back. To this day I’ve never gotten an explanation as to why my supervisor went to such link’s to get my fired and why both he and my foreman lied there ass’s off about what was really going on. Escpecally since they don’t need any reason to fire someone anyway like I say it’s a long story.

    Hello,
I was part of the reduction in force and was sent home on the 12th of June. I was working in Kuwait and had been there only 5 months of my 1year agreement. Thanks KBR, I have a tax liability and was recovering from being laid off from another job. I was waiting to be transfered to Iraq. They had a deadline to get forces reduced that they did not consider those who were fresh into an agreement. I was taken to the PM’s office with HR and walked into the PM finger Painting listening to music during work hours. He had me turn off the stereo for him cause it was to much for him to take his paint covered gloves off and then told me I was part of the RIF. Said there were no jobs available, when my coworkers had rejected there offers because they did not want to risk Iraq. No JOBS what about the jobs that were declined by my coworkers?? The PM did not even have the manners to take a glove off and shake my hand. Just said I would shake your hand but and held up his hands. I do intend to go after them for my remaining pay and tax liability. This was my second time with this company had done 3 years in Iraq from 04 to 07. Anyone have tips for dealing with this dispute resolution? I left previously because of ethical issues from a previous manager. My story is long from the previous round. I can tell you KBR lost all of Afghanistan Contracts.

    Ms Sparky’s Response:
The finger painting KBR Project Manager. Finger painting on the job? Interesting. I guess it wouldn’t that big of a deal for a PM to be partaking in a little stress management activity if they weren’t the primary reason for other employees stress. And I’ll bet he would be the first to fire someone else if he walked into their office and saw them finger painting! I think I’ll just pass this one on.

Was there a new lawsuit filed for overtime? Lopez and Hodes was handling the suit and last I was aware KBR won that suit. That decision came down in 2006. If there is a new suit I would love to know where so I can get my name on that list.

    Ms Sparky’s Response:
I am researching those lawsuits to see what is going on. ANY info on that would be great!

    Ms Sparky’s Response:
Good luck with that. If nothing else. Be sure to write them off on your taxes that you now have to pay!

    Insurgents Target says:

USMI-C 5 Days off for leaving an office door unlocked and security finds it. Even if it’s inside a locked building.
5 Days off for leaving your vehicle unlocked.
5 Days off for losing, even if it’s found, a radio.
3 days off for the driver and passengers for not using a ground guide when backing.
THIS IS SAD!!!! Our head of security and project management here goes to sleep at night and dreams this shit up to implement the next day!! ESPECIALLY DON’T GET CAUGHT WITHOUT YOUR HAT OR LANYARD ON!!! OMFG We would’nt be easy targets for the insurgents here then??

    Ms Sparky’s Response:
Hang in there. Maybe someone else will take it over.

    Curious,
You are correct about the current PM.

    Ms Sparky’s Response:
I am going to pass that information on. What kind of image does that portray. Finger paint in your room at night on your own time.

Hello all, I just recently quit and I have had a TERRIBLE time with KBR and the management. I went to DRP, ethics hotline, HR, ER and many other things KBR has to get this resolved. It has resulted in the DPM and PM causing problems for me, and my manager has had no action against him for these violations. There have been 7 people I know of in my department who personally works with me and for some reason, it keeps getting swept under the rug. This place is a joke, and the management is underqualified, ridiculously moronic and arrogant. It is unbelieveable the way KBR allows the management to treat people. Oh and by the way the 4 people i know of who complained against this manager, somehow he found out and we have all been written up for random things since then!! It is funny how he can walk in and tell us to shut up, but we say anything back and get written up…..this is so frustrating, I am glad I quit…IM DONE!!!!!!!!!!!!

We had electricians here at TQ complain about obvious pencil whipping and other violations but the pencil whippers are still here and the two guys were sent away. 1 went to Baharia and the other is at Al Asad for their efforts to do the right thing. KBR 2 on site was told about the pencil whipping and demanded an electrician sign off on 75 TI packets in less than 3 hours without any inspections even after the Master electrician warned him about the activities. Electrical leads and site management knew about the pencil whipping and tried to force a Master electrician to sign off on it and then shipped him out when he said no and rasied hell about it, theres your KBR ethics right there.

I guess we have been lucky only two people in our entire department had to take a reduction and the ones my manager reduced were known to be worthless. Of course she really doesnt like to fire people unless they really really really mess up. Hell we had a guy get drunk at work, take off his shirt and run around screaming he was an indian and she just demoted him.
