I am a journeyman electrician and have been since 1984. It was a rough go back then but I made it and have no regrets.
I have met some amazing women construction workers along the way. One of them Marjie, another journeyman electrician, is a riot. She is 54, just barely 5′ tall and ALWAYS says whats on her mind. I LOVE IT!!! I just laugh my ass off when we are together.
Marjie called me the other day. She was on a job at the “roach coach” for lunch. She was in line with the rest of the guys. When she got to the front to order the guy on the truck said “I haven’t seen you before, are you a secretary here?” Keep in mind Marjie is wearing her work boots, her hard hat and is dirty from head to toe. She looks around thinking “He can’t possibly be talking to me.” Seeing no other women around, she answers “No, I’m an electrician.” The guy looked stunned. The other guys in line are starting to snicker because they knew what was coming. He says, “An electrician? I didn’t know they let women do that.” The snickering from the guys is now turning to all out laughter. They are just waiting to see what Marjie is going to do. Marjie is shocked that after all these years women are still getting asked that question. But, with all her wit and attitude she snaps back. “Oh, I’m not a woman. I’m a transexual. I still have a penis so it’s OK.” The guys in line just about died laughing. And the guy on the “roach coach” was speechless. What an asshole! YOU GO GIRL!!!
